Security Alert – Email Scams

George Weston Foods is issuing an alert for people to be aware of hoax emails claiming to be from Geoff Starr, the Chief Executive Officer of George Weston Foods. These scam emails claim to offer payments to people interested in acting as agents of the company and transferring sums of money off shore to save the company taxes on funds transfers. These emails are not issued by George Weston Foods or Geoff Starr and you are advised to delete them and not to respond to any requests for personal information.

This scam is sometimes referred to as a “Money Laundering Mule” scam and is designed to launder illegally obtained funds through the consumers’ bank account and obtain “clean” funds by the consumer transferring the funds to the perpetrator via an anonymous money transfer service. Additionally, the scam may also lead to identity fraud if personal and bank account details are provided.
